How To Rent Camping Gears In Iceland + My Experience

After dropping our luggage in BSI Reykjavik, we walked to the city center to pick up our camping gears. Iceland Camping Equipment Rental is located in the heart of the city and from the street, you’ll be able to see their office which is located on the second floor.

I’ve exchanged a few emails with the owner, Delphine, prior to the trip. Even though I have some experience tent camping in the wilderness (back in America), I am still very much confused when it comes to camping in Iceland. She started with a few questions about my plans in Iceland: whether I am going to travel by car, hike or cook at the campsite. Then she proceeded to create a customized set for us.
We went up to the second floor and was promptly greeted by a staff. He asked for my name and led us into the storage room. There was already a set of equipment on the rack with my name labeled on them, he asked us to check if we need to add something on or leave something out. After some discussion, we decided to change to a tent that is more sturdy (but also heavier), added a portable charger and left the sleeping mat out.

The camping gears are in perfect condition. They looked completely new. The staffs were very efficient and attentive with our request, they are also very patient, showing us the right way to use the portable stove and the inflatable mat.

Here is a step-by-step guide on

How To Book Camping Gears from Iceland Camping Equipment Rental

(If you need some guidance)
- Look at the list of camping gears available.
- If you are unsure, the “Best Seller” under “Products” on the drop down menu will give you some insight on which gears campers usually rent.
- If you are really confused, email them to ask for advice. According to my experience, they are happy to guide you through the process.

- Check the rental fees. If you rent an item for a longer period, price per day will be lower.
- Choose the equipment you are going to rent and add to cart.
- On the cart page, enter your pick up and drop off dates.
- Proceed with Payment.

- Go to the address: Baronsstigur 5, 101 Reykjavik.
- Tell them your name.
- Get your ready-to-go equipment set.
- Check if you have everything listed on the reservation page.
- Check if all of them are in good condition (Mine were in excellent condition).
- You are all set!
*** Here are some important things to be aware of before camping in Iceland.

- Wait for the staff to check for missing items.
- Have a safe flight back!

Important Note:

They advertise that they have a 24/7 pick up and drop off service but the office actually opens from 9am to 5pm. However, they have a ground floor storage room, which is indeed accessible 24/7. So if your flight arrives late in the evening but you plan to have an early start the next day, inform the staff ahead of time, via email. They will send you an access code for the ground floor storage room and have your gears ready for pick up.
